Hidden Tohoku Snow Country
Discover the Japan Most Travelers Never See
Beyond Tokyo's neon lights, beyond Kyoto's temples, and beyond Japan's famous ski destinations lies a different side of the country.
A quieter side.
A slower side.
A place where centuries-old traditions remain woven into everyday life, where local restaurants still outnumber chain stores, and where winter shapes everything from architecture and food to culture and community.
Centered around the historic hot spring town of Zao Onsen, this journey explores the heart of Japan's Snow Country—a region known for deep snowfall, incredible hospitality, mountain villages, traditional inns, and some of the country's most underrated skiing.
Unlike Japan's more internationally known ski destinations, Tohoku remains largely undiscovered by foreign travelers. Here you'll find fewer crowds, a stronger connection to local culture, and the opportunity to experience daily life in a part of Japan that many visitors never reach.
Having spent two years living in the region and becoming fluent in Japanese, I've built this trip around both the iconic sights and the lesser-known experiences that made me fall in love with Northern Japan.
Travel with a small group, leave the logistics behind, and experience Japan like you're visiting a local friend.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Japan
Arrive in Tokyo and begin your journey north.
After meeting the group, we'll board the Shinkansen and leave the crowds behind as we travel into the mountains of Northern Japan. The scenery changes quickly, and before long you'll find yourself immersed in a completely different side of the country.
We'll settle into Zao Onsen and enjoy our first evening in one of Japan's most iconic hot spring towns.
Day 2 – First Turns in Snow Country
Wake up surrounded by snow-covered mountains and traditional inns.
Today we'll hit the slopes at Zao Onsen, one of Japan's most unique ski destinations. Wide-open terrain, incredible scenery, and a distinctly local atmosphere make it unlike anywhere else in the country.
After skiing, unwind in one of the town's historic natural hot springs.
Day 3 – The Snow Monsters
Today we'll continue exploring Zao's terrain while taking time to experience one of Japan's most remarkable winter phenomena.
The famous Snow Monsters—trees completely encased in snow and ice—transform the mountaintop into a surreal winter landscape that feels almost otherworldly.
Whether viewed from the slopes, gondolas, or observation areas, they are a true highlight of winter in Tohoku.
Day 4 – Explore Beyond the Guidebooks
One of the advantages of traveling in a small group is the freedom to adapt.
Depending on conditions and group interests, we may explore additional ski terrain, hidden local favorites, or cultural experiences that larger tours simply can't accommodate.
This flexibility often leads to the most memorable moments of the trip.
Day 5 – Ginzan Onsen Excursion
Today we'll visit one of Japan's most picturesque hot spring towns.
With its historic wooden buildings, gas lanterns, and snowy streets, Ginzan Onsen feels like stepping back into another era.
We'll spend time exploring the town, enjoying local food, and experiencing one of Tohoku's most beloved destinations before returning to Zao for the evening.
Day 6 – Powder, Culture, and Local Connections
By now you'll have experienced both the skiing and culture that make this region special.
Today allows us to continue exploring the mountains while also leaving room for the spontaneous discoveries that often become trip highlights—whether that's a hidden restaurant, local event, scenic overlook, or recommendation from someone we meet along the way.
Day 7 – A Deeper Look at Northern Japan
We'll venture beyond the ski resort and spend time exploring the communities, traditions, and daily life that define this region.
This is where the trip truly separates itself from a traditional ski vacation.
The goal isn't simply to ski in Japan.
It's to experience Japan.
Day 8 – Final Day in Snow Country
One last opportunity to enjoy the slopes, soak in the hot springs, and appreciate the slower pace of life that makes Tohoku so memorable.
We'll celebrate the journey together with a farewell dinner featuring some of the region's outstanding local cuisine.
Day 9 – Return to Tokyo
Board the Shinkansen and return to Tokyo.
As the mountains give way to city skylines, you'll have the chance to reflect on a side of Japan that many travelers never experience.
The evening is yours to enjoy in the capital before departure.
Day 10 – Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport and begin the journey home.
You'll leave with memories of deep snow, mountain villages, hot spring towns, incredible food, and a deeper understanding of Japan beyond its most famous destinations.
